Why not! Andre Agassi has used bands for years. In addition to Andre, top pros such as Andy Roddick, Mario Ancic and Maria Sharapova are also tying bands on their racquets as vibration dampeners.

Q ... Why should I buy the OTZ band when I can use any elastic band I have at home or can buy at an office supply store?
A ... “Over the counter” bands contain a high percentage of clay and other impurities. This causes ordinary bands to quickly dry out when exposed to sunlight and air. Temperature extremes also cause ordinary bands to lose their elastic properties especially its recoil and shock absorption capability. Ordinary bands were not designed for the rigors of tennis. Purpose designed OTZ bands are wider, longer and thicker than ordinary elastic bands. OTZ bands are made of special materials that resist drying and have a far better tolerance to temperature extremes ( -7º F to +250º F). This gives you a better performance band with better elastic properties and durability.

Q ... Do band vibration dampeners really work?
A ...
Most definitely. Our testing demonstrates a significant reduction in string and racquet vibration when a band is tied on the racquet. The OTZ band improves vibration dampening performance achieved by the ordinary band by more than 35% (see test results & graphs). Bands also suppress annoying string “twang” giving you a clean, crisp, sound on ball impact. In general, band vibration dampeners are useful in helping prevent aggravation of tennis elbow and/or wrist injury.

Q ... What makes band vibration dampeners better than what I’ve seen on the other people’s racquets?
A ...
There are a number of answers to this question. Conventional dampeners, particularly grommet types can (and do) fly off the racquet. Not a good thing to happen during a match! Imagine stopping match play and now everyone is searching the court for the missing dampener! (This is exactly what happened during the Wimbledon 2006 final match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. See Wimbledon Final 2006)

Q ... What's wrong with the popular "worm" type of dampeners?
A ...
Worm dampeners have an inherent problem. They use plastic hooks for attachment to the strings.  These hooks often dry out, crack and cause the worm to fall off. Our testing shows that worm dampeners do not absorb shock or reduce vibration as well as the OTZ band.

Q ... What about dampeners that contain a gel to absorb the shock?
A ...
In hot and dry conditions this type of dampener may actually split open and leak this gel all over your strings, your racquet and even your clothes. It can be quite a mess! Also overstretching worm dampeners that contain gel during installation can cause the worm to burst.

Case 3: Can vibration damping devices be placed on the strings of the racquet?  If so, where can they be placed?

Decision: Yes, but these devices may only be placed outside the pattern of the crossed strings.

Q ... Can a flying grommet affect the flight of a ball?

I was watching the Wimbledon final when I noticed something strange.

Roger Federer was leading 4 -1 in the fourth set and the game at 40-30 to Federer. Rafael Nadal came to the net to smash a Federer lob and hit the ball low on his racquet frame face, smashing the ball way out of the court to lose the game. The slow motion replay showed a small grommet-type vibration dampener flying off his racquet when he hit the errant shot.

My question is, could the grommet have caused the ball to fly off course? An embarrassed Nadal had to call time out while the ball boys frantically searched the grass for the lost grommet dampener. Nadal went on to lose the set and the match to Roger Federer.

A ... It’s difficult to be emphatic about this, but there certainly is a chance that any loose vibration dampener such as a grommet or “worm”-type could have set the ball off on an unintended trajectory. Also, having a vibration dampener pop off the strings like that can be a cause for concern and – as you correctly reported – embarrassment, especially in a tournament. The OTZ band however, will never fly off the racquet and the chances of it affecting the flight of the ball are virtually zero.

Q ... Why should tennis players wear sunglasses when playing outdoors?

A ... UV blocking sunglasses are actually very good for your eyes. Top ophthalmologists say excessive exposure to UV light reflected off tennis courts’ surface and/or looking into the sun during a serve or smash shot can damage the eyes' front surface. In addition to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, sun exposure can lead to lesions and tumors that may be cosmetically unappealing and frequently require surgical removal. Everyone should wear UV blocking sunglasses when playing tennis outdoors. Don’t play without them!
