My name is David Marcus: My partner Julius Stockfish and I have been tennis buddies for years. When I developed a severe case of tennis elbow Julius recommended that I use a standard elastic band to help absorb the string and racquet vibration caused by the ball's impact. Until then, I had been using the plug type of vibration dampener which was not an effective shock absorber. Worse yet, it had a tendency to fly off my racquet.
This recommendation came from Julius’ observation that several top pros, including Andre Agassi, used what appeared to be an ordinary rubber band tied to their strings; Julius had used such a band for years and noted a marked improvement in vibration reduction.
He believed that if this was good enough for the pros, then the simple elastic band was worth a try, as the plug-type dampener didn’t seem to be helping me much. The band dampener had inherent design advantages over both the plug and worm type of dampeners because the band tied to the racquet strings could not become detached from the strings or fly off the racquet.
I tried a plain elastic band and was pleased with the initial results. I found I could play with less pain, more confidence, and hit more winners. However, we both felt there was significant room for improvement of the band to ensure even better dampening performance and durability. Julius and I immediately identified a business opportunity.
Realizing that despite its advantages, a simple office or newspaper rubber band wasn’t designed for the rigors of the tennis court, we set about designing a new band dampener to ensure that it could live up to the strenuous demands of the game.
Over the next year, intense efforts went into improving the compound, design and unique properties of the Own the Zone band, resulting in a product that incorporates all the benefits and simplicity of the original simple elastic band, but with considerably improved performance and product design. We submitted the OTZ band to rigorous laboratory and on-the-court testing against the leading vibration dampeners and guess what? We found we had a winning, best-in-class product!
Today, after only 2 years on the market, our OTZ bands have been endorsed by some of the world’s best teaching pros and are sold around the globe. But we’re not done yet. In 2009 we’ll bring you more fun, peak performance products so you can Own the Zone in a number of different ways.
